"Protocol Error" Message
Q: I keep getting a “protocol error” message when I try to log on to a CRADC computing node. What is wrong?
A: A number of users have experienced getting disconnected from a CRADC node while working with Stata, and then find they are unable to log back on to that particular node due to a "protocol error". This is due to a known conflict between Stata and version 5.1 of RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol).
If this happens to you please follow these instructions:
- Contact cradc_custodian@cornell.edu and let us know which node(s) you were using so that we can log off the "hung" session for you.
- Log on to another node to continue working.
- Use one of the connections listed below to connect to the CRADC nodes.
ACCEPTABLE REMOTE DESKTOP CONNECTIONS FOR STATA USERS ON THE CRADC NODES:
- Connect to the CRADC nodes using this URL: http://athena.ciserrsch.cornell.edu/tsweb/.
- Conect using your local copy of Remote Desktop*:
- FOR WINDOWS XP: Go to Start --> Programs --> Accessories --> Communications --> Remote Desktop.
- FOR WINDOWS 2000: Same as above.
If Remote Desktop does not show up, then you can download and install it from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsxp/default.mspx.
*If you are already using your local Remote Desktop application to connect to the CRADC node, and you have been running into the Protocol Error problem, then you most likely have an earlier version of RDP. Send e-mail to ciser@cornell.edu and ask for Version 5.2 of the RDP client.
