2nd Annual Census Workshop Series
Mapping & Spatial Analysis

The New York Census Research Data Center is pleased to announce the 2nd Annual Census Workshop Series.  This year’s workshops, which will focus on mapping and spatial analysis, will be held at Baruch College as follows:

March 25th      Mapping, GIS and Spatial Data: U.S. Census and Beyond
April 8th           Hands-on Introduction to ArcGIS
May 8th            Spatial Statistics and Spatial Research Using the Census RDCs

Sponsored by the Baruch College School of Public Affairs, Newman Library, and the New York Census Research Data Center (NYCRDC), the workshops are free and open to the public but registration is required.  To register, or for further information, send a message to benjamin.orr@baruchmail.cuny.edu

Workshop 2:   Hands-on Introduction to ArcGIS
Date:                Tuesday April 8, 2008
Time:                12:00-3:00 (lunch will not be served, due to computer lab location)

Participants will learn to create reference maps, thematic maps, and data manipulation for use in GIS software. This workshop will review and build on the Getting Started "homework assignment," distributed at the first workshop. For participants who are unable to attend the first workshop, call (646) 660-6790 for information on obtaining the assignment and software.

Workshop 3:   Spatial Statistics and Spatial Research Using the Census RDCs

Introduction to Geospatial Statistical Methods
Glenn Deane, Department of Sociology, SUNY, Albany
Non-technical overview of geospatial statistical methods.  Spatial procedures in standard statistical packages such as Stata and SAS. Intended for doctoral students or faculty/researchers proficient in non-spatial statistical methods but who lack experience with spatial statistics.

Spatial Software in the Census RDCs
Personnel from the U.S. Census Bureau will discuss spatial software in the Census RDCs including plans for use of ARC/GIS and other software.

Spatial Research Projects using Census RDCs
Robin Leichenko, Department of Geography, Rutgers University
This presentation will describe a completed Census RDC project that used spatial data, including challenges and opportunities of conducting this type of research in the Census RDCs.
