***** UPDATED SCHEDULE OF DOWNTIMES *****
Athena01 will be down for several days beginning Monday, December 6 for a re-configuration.
Please keep in mind that during the downtime you will still be able to use the other nodes -- which are listed at http://ciser.cornell.edu/athena/athena_software.shtml.
To see how busy any node is at a particular time see http://ciser.cornell.edu/ASPs/AthenaStats.asp.
Athena01 had to be restarted about 9 PM this evening and is back up now.
All of the jobs running prior to the restart were completely stalled and could not be preserved. You will need to restart your jobs on this or other nodes.
Please note The Athena01 node will be re-configured the second week in December which should lead to better performance. In the meantime we suggest limiting the number of simultaneous jobs you run on this node to reduce the extremely heavy utilization the node has been experiencing.
Athena64 will *not* be down tomorrow as was announced earlier. The downtime will be rescheduled once the involved vendor provides us with the correct software for the intended installation. We will try to give users as much lead time as possible before the next downtime is scheduled.
Athena64 (only) will be down this coming
Thursday, Nov 18, from 8 AM - Noon. The other Athena nodes will
remain available during that time. Please plan your work accordingly.
If you did not get all the files you need copied to the new CISERRSCH system, please contact ciser@cornell.edu as soon as possible.
The CISER Research node Athena17 has experienced hardware failure and will no longer be used. Other CISER Research nodes that are available are Athena01, Athena15-16, Athena18-21, and Athena64.
At 9:30am this morning Rhodes Hall was without electricity. The electricity was restored by late afternoon and equipment was brought back on-line slowly. All of the CISER equipment was back on-line at approximately 8:30pm this evening. All computing jobs that were running prior to the outage will need to be restarted.
Due to this unexpected outage, the scheduled downtime that was planned for Wednesday, October 20th has been cancelled.
If you have any concerns related to today's electricity outage, please send email to ciser@cornell.edu.
The old Athena nodes (Athena06, Athena11-12) and the CISERFS1 file server will be decommissioned effective November 8.
Athena users who do not have an account on the new CISER Research nodes must apply for one to use the new nodes and file server. Request an account from http://ciser.cornell.edu/athena_newacct.shtml. You will be notified when your new account is ready.
When the new account is activated, you must move your files from the old \Users\netid directory to your new user space on the CISERDFS1. This must be completed before November 8 at 8:00 AM.
To assist you with moving your files from the old system to the new, we have created a script called "MoveUserFiles" that automates the process. The instructions for using the script are as follows:
Directions for using the "MoveUserFiles" program to move your files from ciserfs1 to ciserdfs1
Start --> All Programs --> Accessories --> Command Prompt
At the C:\> prompt, type T:
MoveUserFiles.pl Z:\users\Netid U:\userNN\Netid
[example: MoveUserFiles.pl Z:\users\kjh28 U:\user2\kjh28 ]
The transfer takes roughly 20 minutes per 3GB. All files will be gzipped and placed in a folder named FROM_CISERFS1. When completed, the details of the files moved will display on the screen. One file, the log file, will display as "skipped." The log file will show the details of the files moved and is located in FROM_CISERFS1as \movelog.txt.
Directions for uncompressing gzip files (gunzip) are available on http://ciser.cornell.edu/athena/ciserrsch_sections/athena_c5ab.shtml.
Optional
To have all of your files uncompressed (gunzipped) in their new location, add -u to the command string:
Example: MoveUserFiles.pl Z:\users\kjh28 U:\user2\kjh28 -u
Please direct questions to the CISER HelpDesk at ciser@cornell.edu.
The following systems will not be available from 8:00
am until 10:00am on Wednesday, October 20th, 2004
Athena06
Athena11
Athena12
ciserfs1 - fileserver [U\]
Please plan your work accordingly. This downtime will not
affect the new CISER research nodes (Athena01, Athena15-21, Athena64
or the CISERDFS1 file server).
We are happy to report that all of the Athena nodes and both file servers are now back in service, after a successful expansion and upgrade of related hardware and software! A list of available nodes, along with the software available on each node is now at http://ciser.cornell.edu/athena/athena_software.shtml. Please note that there are only 3 nodes remaining in the old domain, so it is important to check the node availability in the link above, AND to read the information below:
Every Athena user who has not yet applied for an account on the new CISER Research nodes needs to apply ASAP at http://ciser.cornell.edu/athena_newacct.shtml. Those who have already applied, but have not received their account information, will be receiving their new users letters and passwords in the coming few days. Athena users who have accounts on both systems AND have not yet moved their files from the old file server to the new file server should do so as soon as possible, to ensure that their file move goes quickly and smoothly.
Reminder to all: Instructions for using the new CISER Research nodes, including how to move your files from the old system to the new, are at http://ciser.cornell.edu/athena/ciserrsch.shtml.
There are two new things you should note about the CISER Research domain:
The following Athena nodes are back in service:
Athena03
Athena04
Athena05
Athena06
Athena11
Athena12
The remaining nodes are being rebuilt and will be moved to the new CISER Research Domain under new names.
Please remember -- the nodes above are available for people with accounts on the old Athena system.
To use the new CISER Research Domain nodes (currently Athena 01,15,16, and 64) you must have a separate account for domain! If you have not already done so, you should apply for an account on the new domain at http://ciser.cornell.edu/athena_newacct.shtml -- and make a note in the comments field that you already have an account on the old Athena nodes)
Thank you for your patience.
Athena node expansion and downtime scheduled:
Attention users of *ALL* Athena nodes and file servers (old and new Athena nodes, ciser and ciserrsch domains, ciserfs1 and ciserdfs1 file servers!)
CISER is preparing to expand the capabilities and user disk space of our newest group of servers in the CISER Research Domain. This will involve a substantial downtime (~ 4 days) and is scheduled for Tuesday - Friday, AUGUST 17-20, during which time ALL nodes (old and new) and both file servers will be unavailable!!
If this 4-day downtime creates a critical problem for you
please let us know right away (ciser@cornell.edu) and we
will see if we can arrange alternate resources for you on those days.
We now have two additional servers for Stata users:
Athena15.ciserrsch.cornell.edu and Athena16.ciserrsch.cornell.edu.The file server (ciserdfs1) is mapped to both of these nodes the same as it is on Athena01, and both nodes are dedicated for Stata use only!
Please use these nodes to run Stata jobs that require you
to use the "set mem" command requesting additional memory over
the default setting. As always, on any Athena node, please be sure
to close the Stata application when you are not using it -- so that
the memory will be released for other users.
Athena07 is not working properly and will be taken out of service ASAP sometime today. The following nodes *are* available:
If you have not already done so we would like to encourage each of you to apply for an account on our newest system -- the CISER Research Nodes (currently those include Athena01 and Athena64). You can read about these newest nodes at http://ciser.cornell.edu/athena/ciserrsch_sections/athena_a.shtml. Use of these nodes requires a separate account.
To get an account on the new system:
Please fill out the form at http://ciser.cornell.edu/athena_newacct.shtml
and make a note in the "comments" section that you already have
an Athena account on the old nodes, but wish to have an account
on the CISER Research system.
