7/21/2005  Notice to all Athena users:  Preserve your files during Athena downtime!

In preparation for the extended downtime of CISER's Athena nodes next week (July 25 - 29) we want to remind you to be sure your files are stored properly!  You must have your files stored in your home directory on the U:\ drive if you wish to keep them!  This includes your "My Documents" folder,  but does NOT include the "desktop" of any Athena node.  Files stored on the "desktop" or on the T:\ drive of any Athena node will be deleted and will NOT be recoverable!

As a reminder to all Athena users: Your home directory is *always* where you should store any files you wish to keep.   This way your files will be backed up (as always) and will be accessible from ANY Athena node.  Files stored on the "desktop" of any node, or on the T:\ drive of any node, are NOT backed up and are NOT accessible from other Athena nodes. Please refer to http://ciser.cornell.edu/athena/ciserrsch_sections/athena_c5.shtml for a little more detail.

Our downtime is scheduled to begin early Monday morning (July 25th) and will last, for some nodes, through Friday (July 29th).  This downtime also means there will be no access to Data Archive files, including downloads from the web catalog.  A few nodes and the CISER file server (U:\ drive) should be back up by Monday evening (July 25th) for urgent computing needs.

Please watch this page for updates regarding the downtime, and notice of availability as the nodes come back online.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation.
the CISER Computing Team

7/7/2005 Athena Downtime Scheduled
  • CISER is planning a prolonged downtime (of 3-5 days) for all Athena nodes and the attached file server on July 25-29th.  During this time, our data archive downloads, computing workshop handout downloads, and VPN Client downloads will also be unavailable.   This downtime will allow us to update many applications to the latest versions, as well as to perform important maintenance and apply security patches.  Please let us know send email to CISER immediately if this poses a critical problem for your research so that we can try to make alternate arrangements for you on those days.

3/25/2005 UPDATE Notice regarding Athena02 and Athena65:

3/21/2005:  NOTICE to all Athena users regarding expired passwords!

Due to system level changes, many Athena user passwords expired today.  Those users affected will receive a password expiration message upon first logon to any Athena node and will be prompted to created a new password.  Attempts to connect the VPN or to use a mapped drive to the file server will fail until you have logged on to one of the nodes and changed your password.

3/16/2005:   Notice:  Connectivity to the Athena computing nodes and file server may be sporadic on Wednesday morning, March 23rd, from 5-7 AM, due to work being done on the switches in Rhodes Hall.  The servers should still be running and jobs in process should NOT be interrupted, but your connections to the file server or to any specific node may be interrupted during that time.   Please plan your work accordingly.

3/14/2005:  STATA  on more nodes:

Stata has been re-installed on several of the 32-bit Athena nodes (namely Athena15-16, and 18-21).  There are guidelines below for choosing which node to use for any Stata job.

32-bit nodes (Athena15-16,18-21)
Use these nodes for optimum performance on jobs requiring
less than 50 MB of memory!

64-bit nodes (Athena64-65):
These nodes are the ones you must use if your job requires more than 50 MB of memory.
On these nodes, you may use the SET MEM command to request
up to 2 GB memory.

For access to
more than 2 GB of memory for your Stata job(s) you may send a request to ciser@cornell.edu.

For optimum performance on any node please remember to request only the amount of memory that you truly need -- since requesting more memory can actually slow your job (and others) down!  For help determining how much memory your job needs please see http://www.stata.com/support/faqs/win/memory1.html
