SCHEDULED DOWNTIMES: The Athena nodes are taken down every other month for security and software updates and routine maintenance. During these periods all nodes and the CISER file server may be down for 24 hours or more. Please keep this in mind when planning long-running jobs. The next scheduled downtimes are:
- June 26-30, 2006 completed
- August 15, 2006 completed
- October 11, 2006 completed
- December 13 , 2006 completed
12/13/2006, 3:45 PM :

11/13/2006

10/11/2006
Downtime is over and updates complete!
- All Athena nodes and the CISER file server are back up. All scheduled maintenance and updates were completed successfully.
- GOOD NEWS FOR STATA USERS!! The memory limit for Stata users on all of the 32-bit nodes (Athena01-02, 15-21) has been increased to 250 MB. We hope this will reduce the load on Athena64 and 65, which you should use only when you need greater than 250 MG of memory. Please refer to http://ciser.cornell.edu/FAQ/STATA/STATA_memory.shtm for tips on the effective use of memory with Stata.
10/10/2006 REMINDER!
- Tomorrow, October 11, 2006, all of the Athena nodes
and the CISER file server (the "U:\ drive") will be down from 6
AM until noon for routine maintenance. Please be sure all your
files are properly stored in your home directory (and not on the desktop
or T:\ drive of any node) and plan your work accordingly
9/19/2006 Announcement:
Brief loss of connectivity expected on Oct 8
- On Sunday, Oct 8, between 8 AM and noon there will be network maintenance at Rhodes Hall. At some point during that time period we expect connectivity to the Athena nodes to be lost for about 10 minutes. Jobs should continue to run, but users may become disconnected and have to re-logon.

- Athena64 is back on line.
8/15/2006 2:00 PM UPDATE
All of the Athena nodes except Athena64 are back on line and available. Athena64 will be down until further notice.
8/15/2006 10:15 AM
The following systems are back on-line as of 10:15am:
- Athena15 - Athena21
- Athena65
- Athena99
We expect Athena01, Athena02 and Athena64 to be back on-line by 2:00pm this afternoon.
8/04/2006: 3:45 PM
- Athena64 is not available as of 3:40 this afternoon. User access has been removed until the node is restarted at 7 PM this evening. The node should be available to users again by 7:30 PM.
8/03/2006: update 4:05 PM
- Athena64 is still down (after being taken down at noon to replace some hardware). It is expected to be back up by 6 PM, but read/write performance will be slow as there is still limited access to the file server. This node (and perhaps either Athena01 or 02 also) will have to be taken down again in the next few days when additional hardware arrives. We will try to give you as much notice as possible before the next downtime, but we do not recommend starting very long running jobs (i.e more than a day) on Athena64 at this time.
7/12/2006: As of 6:20 AM today
Athena01 and Athena02 have
been updated and the nodes are back up.
7/11/2006: 1:30 PM
Athena01 and Athena02 to be restarted tomorrow.
- Athena01 rebooted unexpectedly yesterday. Our system administrators need to apply a newly released patch to the operating systems of both Athena01 and Athena02 . Both nodes will be taken down briefly tomorrow morning (Wed, July 12 ), at approximately 6 AM , the patch applied, and the nodes restarted. We will post a notice to this page when the nodes are back up. We apologize for the short notice, but this is being done in an effort to prevent either node from restarting again without warning. Thank you for your patience.
7/5/2006: 3:30 PM
