Compressing your files on the research servers
The recommended way to compress SAS datasets is to use SAS to create compressed observations.
The following methods of file compression can be used on any type of file on the research servers:
WinZip is a popular compression utility which copies files into zipped archives with a .zip extension. Each file can be compressed separately, or a group of files can be compressed together into one zipped file. This is the best method for file transfers.
To learn how to use WinZip, from a research server go to Start Menu→All Programs→WinZip, click on the Help tab, and then on the Frequently Asked Questions button. Data must be unzipped before it can be used by software packages on the research servers.
- NTFS Windows Compression
This method is easy to use, but it is also platform dependent. Data compressed in this manner may be used in its compressed state by most software packages on the research servers. This method is not recommended for preparing your data for file transfers. more...
